On food, food insecurity, and the need for the food tax exemption.

Jen's Equity State column in this week's JH News&Guide tackled all things food. The heartbreak of a 9-year-old celebrating their birthday in line for the food pantry. The pain of grandparents who can't feed themselves much less help out with their new grandbaby. And the need to start to create structural solutions that address food insecurity.


Because charity is not justice.


"For those in our community who could least afford it, there is a strong likelihood that a few months from now they may have to pay an extra 8% on the food they buy to feed their families. We’ll all go from paying no tax on “food for domestic consumption” to adding 8 cents per each $1 we spend. Wyoming’s regressive tax structure means this will hit the poorest the hardest."
